Who Has More Goals Than J. Toews? by @MedinaMarie_PI

If you are helping your team win, then yes, yes it is.
The NHL fan base is loud, boisterous, and, at times, overzealous. Every single team has a following that is ride or die. These ride or die fans are the ones that fuel the fires of rivalries and spawn debates about who really is the best of the best. These debates can get ugly fast as we have all seen time and again on social media.

Over the past few weeks, one of the lingering talking points has been the topic of Chicago Blackhawks Captain, Johnathan Toews and his amazing leadership. Some would go as far to say that his leadership ability is above any and all in the NHL.

Even above that of Pittsburgh Penguins' Captain, Sidney Crosby.

Leadership is great. It is even better when that leader is actually helping a team win. Then again, you don't have to be the denoted leader of a team to do that.

Toews has scored only 20 goals this season. There are four other players on the Blackhawks bench that have more and a fifth player that is tied: Patrick Kane (32), Artemi Panarin (24), Marion Hossa (23), Artem Anisimov (22), and Richard Panik (20).

Comparatively, there are also four Pittsburgh Penguins that have more goals than Johnathan Towes:
Sidney Crosby (41), Evgeni Malkin (33),  Phil Kessel (22), and Conor Sheary (21). Patric Hornqvist is knocking on the door with 18 goals.

The most telling statistic is that Sheary missed an entire month of playing time and is still ahead of Toews. Sheary has been clicking on all cylinders playing on a line with Crosby and Jake Guentzel and it has paid off in terrific fashion.

Let's take a look at some other notable, and maybe surprising names, that also have also scored more than "20-goal Toews":
  • Wayne Simmonds (29) and Breyden Schenn (22) of the Philadelphia Flyers, a team that won't even see the post season.
  • Brent Burns of the San Jose Sharks, a defenseman, holds a respectable 27 goals.
  • Eric Staal, do doesn't do much of anything except cause mayhem, has scored 24 goals
  • Blake Wheeler of the Winnipeg Jets (another team on the outside of the postseason) has tickled the twine 22 times this season
  • Sebastian Aho, the 19 year old rookie of the Carolina Hurricanes, has 21 goals.
All in all there are 72 players with more goals than Johnathan "The Canadian Dream" Toews....but he is the best captain in the league with the highest level of leadership ability? 72 players, four of which are on his own team, have more goals...yet he wears a C?

Sure! Whatever fruits your loops. I will just continue to thank my lucky stars that Sidney Patrick Crosby leads the Pittsburgh Penguins. After all, who really is better than Crosby?

We are truly blessed.
