The biggest current injury is to superstar defensemen Kris Letang (upper body), who hasn't played since February 21st against Carolina and currently sits on injured reserve. Joining him on IR is defensemen Trevor Daley, who was injured (lower body) in that same Carolina game and defensemen Olli Maatta, who left a February 16th game against the Winnipeg Jets early due to a hand injury.
Daley and Maatta are important pieces on the backend; Letang is irreplaceable.
Another top contributor, Patric Hornqvist, has missed three games due to a concussion. He hasn't played since March 5th against Buffalo. Fourth line center Matt Cullen, whose value extends well beyond his role, has missed the last two games for undisclosed reasons. Bryan Rust, who has been a fixture on the top line, is on IR and hasn't played since February 9th against Colorado due to an upper body injury.
These are only the current injuries. Players like Conor Sheary and Justin Schultz are back from their own injuries.
Due to all of the players out of the lineup, and the team being on a distant road trip in Western Canada, the Pens played last night with only 11 forwards. They opted to dress 7 defensemen instead.
