With injuries piling up everyone was waiting for Jim Rutherford to make a move, and he's now done so.
Off to Carolina in exchange for Hainsey is a 2nd round pick and Danny Kristo, who had been with the Baby Penguins. Carolina will also retain half of Hainsey's $2.5 million salary. He is an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. The trade was originally broken by Renaud Levoie.
Hainsey holds the distinction of being be active player with the most games played without appearing in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. That's likely to change.
Moments after the trade was announced the Penguins lost a defender as well. Trevor Daley, the team announced, underwent successful knee surgery that would see him out up to six weeks. Daley was injured in the first period of Tuesday's game against the same Hurricanes the Penguins just traded with.
