TRP: Snow Rinaldo, #JagrWatch and the New Jersey Yawn by @LCJS

By: Lee C.J. Sobotka | Staff Writer

This is Three Rivers Philosophizer - A weekly review of stuff that is going on in my brain... at least the stuff that has to do with hockey. If you don't like it, I don't blame you.

This Week In #FartNoise:

On Monday, Zac Rinaldo got an 8 game suspension for his dirty hit on Kris Letang.  Rinaldo himself thought that he would get 10 games when he talked about how that hit "changed the game," so it could be said that the NHL went soft on him.

"Don't blame me if da league is soff!"
The reactions were understandable.

Before the suspension was announced, Letang had this to say:

There are two things you can count on in this world: Cloudy winter days in Pittsburgh and Jagr rumors.  Mark Madden was credited as the source of the rumors that the Pens are interested in trading Chris Kunitz since he's getting older and has lost a step - Perron has taken his place on Crosby's wing, after all - and in either that trade or a separate one, the Pens would acquire Jagr to play wing for Malkin.

My take:

Jets @ Penguins

We already knew that this game would be played without Sidney Crosby.
At least Hornqvist and Letang returned.

Early in the game, it was all Dave Perron. He was an absolute force.
Down 2-1 at the end of the 2nd period, Letang hopped on the ice a little early to put a shot on net, and Downie was able to tie the game up with mere seconds left.
In the end, the depleted Pens beat the Jets 5-3!

Penguins @ Capitals

Early in the 1st, Ovechkin scored on a deflected shot from the point to make the score 1-0 Washington.  This left me feeling a little bit...

Towards the end of the 2nd, Ovechkin struck again, this time on the power play.

Halfway through the 3rd, the Caps made it 3-0.

Shortly thereafter, it was 4-0 Caps.
I kept watching but the game was well over by then.

Penguins @ Devils

Early in the game, the Devils had a 5-3 power play for a whole 2 minutes.
Scuderi was fantastic and the Pens were able to kill it off.
At the end of the 1st, it was still 0-0. However, the crowd got some extra entertainment in New Jersey:

Did I mention this game was boring?

With 13 minutes left in the game, the Devils wrap around goal made it 1-0. It felt like 1 million to 1.

Kunitz was finally able to tie up the game with 3 minutes left in the game.
In the OT, Simon Despres won the game on a shot from the point!
