Pens-Wild Preseason Game Recap, Pens Win- Bortuzzo Leaves Injured

The Pittsburgh Penguins won a preseason game against the Minnesota Wild by a score of 3-2 in overtime. Of course, wins and losses do not matter at all during preseason, but it is nice to get a victory when you have a rookie head coach.

Here's the Pens' box score from the game:

What we noticed:

Pittsburgh Penguins fans are going to love Patric Hornqvist. As beloved as James Neal was, Hornqvist has the potential to be even more popular in this town once the season gets going. Hornqvist was dominant down-low near the net in the offensive zone against the Wild, and that is what Hornqvist's game is all about. Hornqvist. We cannot wait to see Hornqvist get to play with Evgeni Malkin or Sidney Crosby.

Once again Simon Despres was noticeable for negative and postive reasons. Despres took another bad penalty which led to a goal for the Wild. That's two games in a row that Despres has taken a penalty which led to an opposing goal. In the past, Dan Bylsma would have probably sent Despres to Syria, but luckily there is a new coach in town who understands that young players will make mistakes. Despres ended up making up his mistakes by tallying two assists, and sparked the crowd and his team with a fight. (If you believe in that :) ) Despres has been very aggressive this preseason and has shown that he is more than capable of playing every night for this team. His puck carrying abilities seem to get better and better and he seems like he is ready to breakout in the NHL.

Brandon Sutter and Beau Bennett were both fantastic as well. Both Sutter, and Bennett, have built up incredible chemistry this preseason Bennett showed magical wrists (Instead of injured ones) in the first period with a great feed to Sutter for the first goal of the game. Bennett has not only looked like a former first-round pick this preseason, but he looks like he is good enough to be a permanent top-six winger for this team. Sutter scored two goals in the game and has looked like a much better two-way player so far this preseason. Sutter can definitely have a much more productive season if the Pens keep Bennett and he together for the time being.

Other notes from the game

  • • Jeff Zatkoff shut down a few nice chances by the Wild, including in the third period. However, a sub .900 save percentage is not going to get it done.

  • Pens' prospect Oskar Sundqvist, who has had a tremendous camp, looked really good again. Sundqvist scored a goal, and had three shots on net, as well as three hits in a little over 12 minutes of playing time. Sundqvist looks like he could eventually be a top-9 forward for this franchise.

  • A lot of people were complaining about the ice, tonight and at the previous home game as well. You have to wonder what the issue is and if it is going to be an ongoing problem all year.

  • Robert Bortuzzo left the game with an injury. As of right now there is now news regarding this.
