Pittsburgh Penguins' training camp is underway and there is already some big news. First off, Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin are not participating due to injuries. Apparently it is nothing serious, although we are not sure if Crosby has been fake arrested again or not. Here is what Josh Yohe had to say about the matter:
I wouldn't buy into anything serious. People are already saying this is more than a case of "Campitis" basically two veterans playing hooky. I am sure some will gripe about it, but it would be silly to question Crosby's work ethic.
This is Mike Johnston's first NHL training camp as a NHL head coach and he was already a part of an internet hoax. Our good friend Mike Darnay, from Pensburgh.com, made a joke about Johnston hitting players with a taser if they decide to dump the puck in. The popular website Thescore.com took this tweet literally and even made a blog post about it.
Good thing this isn't real because if it were, Craig Adams would be dead. In all seriousness, it is awesome that Johnston is buying into puck possession. This team will be a lot tougher to play against if they aren't looking to just dump the puck in every chance they get. This team has enough skill to carry the puck in and create offense and it is a detriment to just give the puck back to the other team so often.
Some other news
Pascal Dupuis is wearing a non-contact jersey for the first week or so. Olli Maatta has been cleared for limited contact. Derrick Pouliot is out but will skate in mornings.
If you wanted to get a tone for how the coaches and players are feeling, here is some audio from coach Johnston and a few players.
