Free Agency Update: Capitals Sign Chris Conner

The Washington Capitals continue on their odd Penguins fetish, signing Chris Conner to a one year, two way deal.

Conner, 30, was a pet project of former coach Dan Bylsma and was given ample playing time between the Penguins and their minor league team in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.  On the Baby Pens he

was a big part of their success.  On the big Pens, not so much.

The diminutive Conner, generously listed at 5'9" and 180 lbs, was often frustrating placed on the top line opposite of Sidney Crosby where he became a possession void.  Perhaps best used on the bottom six, if at all, his skills were oddly placed with that of a top end talent making him the target of frustration among many in the fan base.

Conner joins the fifth team in the NHL career.  He was undrafted but signed by the Dallas Stars in 2005-06 after going to Michigan Tech for four years.  From there he landed a free agent contract with the Penguins in the 2009-10 season.  From there he hoped back and forth from the Detroit Red Wings to the Phoenix Coyotes and back to the Penguins.

More than a few fans will breathe a sigh of relief at his departure and wonder what exactly is the deal with the Capitals.
