Free Agency Update: Calgary Signs Away Deryk Engelland

Stop us if you've heard this one: Calgary Flames' GM Brad Treliving and defenseman Deryk Engelland walk into a bar....

In a day of monster contracts being given to now former Penguins, the Calgary Flames joined in on the action signing the now former Penguin to a 3-year, $8.7 million contract. The Flames have
Deryk Engelland
struggled in recent years and under former Pens head coach Dan Bylsma, the 32 year old defenseman showed a willingness to play at the forward position as needed, both of which may have led to the contract.

It had been revealed by many national media types over the past few days that as many as 10 teams were soliciting the services of Engelland.  The 6'2", 202 lbs Engelland was a feel good story, working his way up through the minor leagues such as the ECHL to make a career and name for himself in the NHL.

Over his 5 years as a Penguin, Engelland established himself as a rugged defenseman that didn't produce much offensively while playing along the blueline. His 13 goals and 35 assists paled in comparison to his 33 PIM but his presence was often felt in games where physicality would be held at a premium.

Good luck to Deryk Engelland in Calgary.  Enjoy swimming in dollar bills.
