Jack Johnson Continues To Run His Mouth About the Pens

It seems that at least one player always seems to have a need to run his mouth in professional sports. If you look through the history vaults, you will see countless examples of players trash-talking to the media, and most of the time it has come back to bite that player in the ass. (See Jeremy Stevens, of the Seattle Seahawks, leading up to Super Bowl XL.)

The Pittsburgh Penguins currently have a 2-1 lead over the Columbus Blue Jackets  in their first-round matchup of the Stanley Cup playoffs. The Penguins have comeback from 3-1 deficits in two of the three games. Saturday night, in game three, the Penguins trailed 3-1 in the third period, only to score three straight goals in less than three minutes to win the game.

It was an epic comeback for the Pens and even more epic meltdown by the Blue Jackets. Despite the meltdown, Blue Jacket's defenseman Jack Johnson seems to feel pretty damn good about the series. In fact, Johnson is giving the Penguins plenty of bulletin board material by talking a good amount of smack on the Pens.

When asked about the Pens after game three Johnson said "They're nothing special." While I agree, I  am not sure it  is smart to talk trash on a team that already leads the series and has come back from 3-1 deficits twice in three games. Not sure how smart it is to talk smack on a team that is clearly more talented than yours, especially when you trail in the series.

Johnson, who is having a Hell of an individual series, went on to add more quotes today, giving himself plenty of compliments.

Johson is playing well. Hell, Johnson has a goal in all three games, and the Pens have made him look like Bobby freaking Orr at times.  If you watch Johnson's goal from last night, his quotes certainly sing true, as Beau Bennett gave  an Alexander Ovechkin-Esque defensive effort.

As for Johnson's quotes, I am not quite sure what he was trying to accomplish. Part of me thinks that Johnson is trying to get the Pens off their game, taking a page out of the Philadelphia Flyers. The other part of me thinks that Johnson is acting out of desperation, and he thinks he 's a good leader by giving himself and his team confidence. I do not see how his quotes are a good thing though, especially since the Pens seemingly dominated the game 5-on-5 after the first period Monday night, and have a hungry group of goal-deprived superstars.

Either way, if Dan Bylsma is smart he will show his team what Johnson said.

  1. The problem with comparing Bennett with Ovechkin: Bennett was a +1. Ovechkin would have been a -3.
